Karla
W. Simon '69 is involved in some very Western-sounding
activities. A professor of law at the Columbus School of Law,
Catholic University of America, she early on worked to define the
concept of charity in American tax law and recently has dealt with
the legal environment for not-for-profit organizations in emerging
democracies. She co-founded the International Center for
Not-for-Profit Law and currently edits the International
Journal of Not-for-Profit Law. A new undertaking is the Center
for International Social Development, an interdisciplinary program
dedicated to promoting "international development in the
interests of peace and justice, with respect for the totality of
the human person," which she co-directs. Karla earned her J.D.
at Duke University and an LL.M. in taxation from New York
University. She also studied at the University of Heidelberg,
Germany (she’s fluent in German and speaks or reads French,
Spanish and Portuguese). From Clemson, South Carolina, Karla
majored in history at Western.
