Certification News

Jennifer Baker Williams (HDRBS), H. Dean Smith (HDRBS), Connie McCarthy (PFD), Ann Bainbridge Frymier (Academic Affairs), and Jim Oris (Academic Affairs) all received their certificates for completion of the Lean Leader Certification program in the month of July.  Congratulations to all!

The fall 2017 Lean Certification cohort of 25 staff members from across campus will be announced in early August.  Notifications will be sent from the Lean Initiatives office via email.  For those currently in the program, fall courses have been added to TRAIN and are available for scheduling.  Details for the courses including dates and times can be found on the Lean Initiatives website.

Boiler Preventative Maintenance

What is the difference between reactive maintenance and preventative maintenance?  It could be the difference between having a cold shower (reactive) versus a hot shower, or a chilly start to your morning due to no heat (reactive) versus reliable heat.  PFD customers expect heating, cooling, hot water and other utilities to always be available.  This is achieved in large part by striving to prevent breakdowns of systems and equipment. 

A project team examined our preventative maintenance plan for boilers and found room for improvement.  The Physical Facilities department currently utilizes several factory service technicians and companies to provide service to over 60 boilers of varying sizes across campus.  While many boilers are new and do not breakdown, a lack of regularly scheduled preventive maintenance can result in future breakdowns, shortened equipment life, and unhappy customers.

Mark Lawrence, Todd Joseph, Dusty Hill, Scott Rein, and Gene Rader worked together to examine the current state of our preventative maintenance program and to make improvements to reduce future reactive maintenance.  The team determined that by using one service provider for all boilers, it would result in a more responsive 24/7/365 emergency service, increased support for in-house technicians, more consistent service plans and economies of service by reducing the number of trips to campus by multiple providers.  This comprehensive maintenance plan includes factory recommended service, annual inspection by state inspectors, and reactive service should it become necessary.   

Through this change students, faculty and staff will be able to depend on more reliable, heating, cooling and other critical services.
