ART 389 The History of Photography (3)

This course will trace central developments in photography's history, from its nineteenth-century origins to its present digital afterlife. Rather than attempting a comprehensive survey of the medium, we will examine a series of case studies taken from the diverse discourses in which photography functions, including art, science, law, journalism, criminology, urban planning, and entertainment. Particular attention will be paid to theoretical and methodological questions underpinning the medium.

Recommended prerequisite: ART 188.
