Coincident with the evolving market and technology of printed books came an explosion of literary invention. Specific topics depend on the choice of the professor and may include early modern developments in poetry, the invention of French classical drama, prose from Montaigne’s Essais to the experimental short forms of the 17th century, or novels and philosophical contes of the Enlightenment.
