Examines how intimate relationships between individuals, the bonds of love and friendship, intersect with and are shaped by social expectation, cultural taboos, and historical events. The theme is developed chronologically, from the Middle Ages to the present, emphasizing specific issues of conflict between individual desires and social norms.
