Prerequisites and Admission

Applicants to the B.A./M.A. program in Spanish must have completed a minimum of 64 undergraduate credits by the time of application with a GPA of 3.25 and 3.50 in Spanish. Study abroad prior to application is strongly recommended. Applicants should also have completed one 400 level course. The deadline for application is March 15th of the junior year. Students should send a letter of application in Spanish to the Director of Graduate Studies in Spanish, explaining their interest in the program and their intended goals. Applicants must also provide two faculty letters of recommendation. At least one of the letters must be from a member of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. Highest priority will be given to students who have studied abroad for at least one semester.

Program Requirements

(30 semester hours)

This program requires a minimum of 30 graduate semester hours. Varying degrees of emphasis in literature, cultural studies and linguistics are possible depending on selection of courses. Students receiving the Bachelor’s degree prior to completing the master’s degree can count up to 9 hours of graduate course work toward their bachelor’s degree with permission of the appropriate advisors. Those hours can also count toward the completion of their Master’s degree. Students must have completed a minimum of 128 hours to be classified as a graduate student. A minimum of 150 hours is required for the combined program: a 120 semester hour minimum for a Bachelor’s degree and 30 hour minimum for a Master’s degree.
