Canvas - Session 1 - Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) Introduction

Objective:
Participants will learn to: Navigate Canvas Customize Settings
Description:
In this 30 minute session you will learn how to access Canvas, customize the Dashboard, find your Course, set Notifications, organize the Navigation Menu and use the Canvas Guides. Session Pre-work: Please review Where can I find a list of Canvas terminology? Make sure you have access to at least one Canvas course as a teacher. If you need access to a course as a teacher please contact Cyndi Govreau at govreacl@miamioh.edu before the date of the session. This is a hands-on session so come prepared with your computer!

Canvas - Session 2 - Canvas Content - Add Content and Niihka Migration

Recommended Prerequisites:

Objective:
Participants will: Add content to Canvas
Description:
This 60 minute session is designed for users who know how to navigate Canvas (Session 1 skills). Make sure you have access to at least one Canvas course as a teacher. You will practice uploading and adding content to Announcements, Pages, Assignments, Discussions, Quizzes, and Files. NOTE: All instructions for adding content can be found in the Canvas Guides. This is a hands-on session so come prepared with your computer! NOTE: this session will not cover Respondus LockDown Browser usage by students but information is available in the Knowledge Base article Respondus Lockdown Browser: Download and Install
Skills To Be Attained:
Adding content to Announcements, Pages, Assignments, Discussions, Quizzes, and Files.

Canvas - Session 3 - Gradebook, Rubrics, and SpeedGrader

Recommended Prerequisites: 

Canvas - Level 1 Canvas First Steps
Canvas - Session 2 - Canvas Content - Add Content and Niihka Migration

Objective:
Participants will: Complete set up of assessments; Take assessments as a student; Grade assessments.
Description:
Session Pre-work - Required activity: Before coming to this session please add one of each of these to your course: assignment; quiz; and discussion. (Refer to the Canvas Guides or attend Session 2 if you have questions about adding content to Canvas.)  In this fast moving 60 minute session you will: Create assignment groups; Set up weighted averages; Modify assignments using the properties; Add a rubric; Submit as “test student” a document to the assignment, complete the quiz, and post to the discussion; and Utilize SpeedGrader to grade “test student” submissions. Please bring with you (electronically or on paper) any rubrics that you currently use. Rubric samples will be provided in case you do not currently use rubrics. This is a hands-on session so come prepared with your computer!

BYOC - Bring Your Own Course

Recommended Prerequisites: 

Canvas - Level 1 Canvas First Steps
Canvas - Session 2 - Canvas Content - Add Content and Niihka Migration

Prior knowledge of adding content to Canvas is required to attend this two-hour session. This BYOC session is an opportunity for you to start and/or wrap up course set-up in Canvas with an Instructional Designer (ID) on site to answer questions as you set up the course. Please note that this is not a training session but an opportunity for you to schedule a time to work on your course development with an ID available to answer questions.

Time is of the essence in this two-hour session so you must come to this course development session prepared with a determined mind to create substantial progress in your course construction. Prior to the session, make sure you have the following items ready to access on your own laptop (bring your own device “BYOD”) :

1. Your course syllabus with detailed class schedule.
2. A list of assignments you will include in Canvas Gradebook.
3. An electronic folder that contains your course documents, i.e. readings, assignments, lecture slides, presentations, or video/audio files.
4. An electronic folder that contains images, i.e. your profile picture, course textbook picture, and/or other visual presentations you want to add into your course.
5. An electronic folder or document that contains a list of the website URLs you need to use. * (This folder is optional based on your pedagogical needs.)

Registration and Cancellation

There is a prerequisite for this session, you must have prior training experiences on Canvas from either A OR B below:
A. At least one (1) session of ELM Canvas training session (i.e. Canvas Level 2, Canvas Session 2, Canvas Introduction and Course Migration, Assessment and Gradebook, Building Online Engagement, any webinar training session, eLearning workshop training, or one-on-one training sessions with an ID). You must know how to add content - content page, assignment, quiz, or discussion.

B. Self-training courses equivalent to the above in Atomic Learning (1.5-hr Canvas Instructor Training, and/or the 0.5-hr Canvas Instructor Grading and Assessment Training). You must know how to add content - content page, assignment, quiz, or discussion.

Maximum participant registration for each session is four (4). Please register for a time slot that best suits your schedule. If you are unable to attend your scheduled session please cancel your registration to open the session for another faculty.
