What is Athletic Training?

Athletic training prepares you for a career as a certified athletic trainer in a variety of settings. This major helps you develop skills in prevention, clinical evaluation, immediate care, rehabilitation, and administration. Students who successfully complete this major are qualified and eligible to take the Board of Certification (BOC) examination.

Miami's program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE).

Personal attention

Low faculty-student ratios allow for a greater breadth of class discussions and more personal interaction. You will also have opportunities to do one-on-one research with our internationally recognized faculty, as well as independent projects and internships.

Clinical experiences

You will develop your skills in a wide variety of clinical sites, including sport practices and competitions with Miami University Intercollegiate Athletics, local high schools, sports medicine clinics, and other affiliated clinical sites.

Are there special admission requirements?

Yes, to enter the athletic training major, students must apply to and be accepted by the faculty of the Athletic Training Education Program. Admission to the Athletic Training Education Program is limited due to accreditation enrollment restrictions. The pre-professional phase of the program occurs for two semesters during which time the student will be rotated through clinical experiences in Intercollegiate Athletics. They will observe and assist the staff Athletic Trainers and athletic training students in a variety of athletic training facilities with several different teams and athletes. All pre-professional athletic training students are required to complete an application to the program during their second semester. The following criteria must be met to be considered for admission:

  • Documentation of signed Technical Standards in Athletic Training.
  • Completion of at least 24 total credit hours including a minimum of 12 Miami Plan hours.
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5 in the Global Miami Plan and required courses.
  • Completion of KNH 182, KNH 183, KNH 183.L, and KNH 188.
  • Minimum grade of “B” in KNH 182, KNH 183, and KNH 183.L.
  • Successful evaluations from the supervising athletic trainers.
  • Documented annual health history/physical examination (dated no earlier than 1/1 of application year).
  • Documented Hepatitis B vaccine series (or waiver).
  • Successful writing sample.
  • Interview with Athletic Training Education Program Director.
  • Completed admission application and supplemental materials. (Applications are available through your major advisor and the KNH Department.)

Acceptance to the program is very competitive. Completion of the above items does not guarantee admission to the program.

Transfer students

*In addition to the above requirements, transfer students are considered for acceptance into the MU ATEP upon completion of the following:

  • Completion of the MU ATEP undergraduate application.
  • Submission of syllabi and coursework from all previous athletic training courses taken.
  • Demonstration of all competencies/proficiencies associated with transfer courses.
  • Advisement with MU ATEP Director.
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5* on all transferred courses. (Although the minimum GPA requirement to be admitted at MU is a cumulative 2.0, the ATEP requires a cumulative 2.5 GPA for acceptance.)
  • Minimum grade of “B” in all transferred AT coursework. (Probationary acceptance may be considered for transfer students who have not met the grade requirement, however the student will be required to take the corresponding AT course.)
  • Completion of 30 observational hours in the MU Athletic Training Facilities.

    • What courses would I take?

    Areas of study include anatomy, biomechanics, therapeutic modalities and rehabilitation, and prevention and assessment of athletic injuries.

    What can I do with this major?

    The health and sports medicine fields have many opportunities for Athletic Training majors. Upon successful completion of the Board of Certification examination, students may begin careers in universities, professional sports, high schools, sports medicine clinics, industry, and other allied health settings. Miami's job placement rate is strong, thanks in part to the well-rounded education and practical experience students receive in internships and field experiences.
