What is Athletic Training?

Athletic training prepares you for a career as a certified athletic trainer in a variety of settings. This major helps you develop skills in prevention, clinical evaluation, immediate care, rehabilitation, and administration. Students who successfully complete this major are qualified and eligible to take the Board of Certification (BOC) examination.

Miami's program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE).

Personal attention

Low faculty-student ratios allow for a greater breadth of class discussions and more personal interaction. You will also have opportunities to do one-on-one research with our internationally recognized faculty, as well as independent projects and internships.

Clinical experiences

You will develop your skills in a wide variety of clinical sites, including sport practices and competitions with Miami University Intercollegiate Athletics, local high schools, sports medicine clinics, and other affiliated clinical sites.

Are there special admission requirements?

Yes, to enter the athletic training major, students must apply to and be accepted by the faculty of the Athletic Training Education Program. Admission to the Athletic Training Education Program is limited due to accreditation enrollment restrictions. The pre-professional phase of the program occurs for two semesters during which time the student will be rotated through clinical experiences in Intercollegiate Athletics. They will observe and assist the staff Athletic Trainers and athletic training students in a variety of athletic training facilities with several different teams and athletes. All pre-professional athletic training students are required to complete an application to the program during their second semester.
