Nutrition, an area of health science, studies human metabolism as it relates to nutrition. This major provides an interdisciplinary curriculum with courses in nutrition, food science, food systems management, lifestyle, and health, with supporting courses in chemistry, social science, and management. Students in this major must complete one of two concentrations, Community Nutrition or Dietetics, which fulfills the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) accredited Didactic Dietetics Program requirements.
Miami has one of the few nutrition and dietetics programs housed in a department of kinesiology and health. This gives you the option of focusing your program in the popular areas of exercise and health, exercise physiology, or sports.
For your capstone experience, you have a semester-long field placement with a dietitian. You also have opportunities to work with Miami faculty on research projects.
Traditionally, Miami graduates have had outstanding pass rates on the National Registration Exam for dietitians.
Miami's program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND).
In addition to a core of courses in health, exercise science, and sport/leisure, Miami's program in nutrition and dietetics includes courses in food science, nutrition, exercise, and health, with supporting courses in natural science, social science, and management. You can also choose courses for a special emphasis, such as sports nutrition or gerontology (the study of aging), or to strengthen an area of special interest, such as business or science.
The Dietetics program concentration also fulfills the didactic portion of the requirements needed to become a registered dietician and a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND). To become a registered dietician, students must complete an AND-approved clinical experience following graduation. These clinicals, usually lasting 10–12 months, are offered by healthcare facilities or educational institutions.
The Nutrition major, with a Community Nutrition concentration, allows the student to complement a foundation of nutrition, chemistry, behavior, physiology, microbiology, and statistics, with course selections based on career interest. A graduate completing this major may choose from career opportunities in business, industry, education, or research, including medical and pharmaceutical sales, product development and marketing, and food-related businesses. This major may also be appropriate for students planning to pursue careers in health care, corporate wellness, food systems management, government food/nutrition program administration, public policy, and other allied health professions.
The Nutrition major, with a Dietetics concentration, is accredited by ACEND of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND). This fulfills the didactic portion of the requirements to become a registered dietitian and a professional member of the AND. To become a registered dietitian one must complete an AND approved clinical internship following graduation* and pass the AND registration exam. Dietitians are professionally prepared to perform nutritional assessment, counseling, and education as components of preventive, curative, or restorative health.
