Student Publications

Can I work on the student newspaper?
The newspaper here is called The Miami Student and it comes out twice a week (on Tuesdays and Fridays). Any student is welcome to work for the newspaper. In the fall, you can come to the newsroom (17 MacMillan Hall) and talk to the editors, call them at 513-529-2259, or attend information sessions at the beginning of the year.
Look for advertisements about informational meetings in the newspaper or find the newspaper table at MegaFair.
How big is the staff?
In addition to a 10-person business staff and about 15 editors, dozens of students contribute as writers, columnists, and beat reporters. The staff encourages all students interested in writing to contact the editors.
What can you do besides reporting?
The business staff sells ads and employs advertising directors, account representatives, and bookkeepers. Other important staff positions include graphic artists, cartoonists, photographers, and page designers.
How about the yearbook?
It's called Recensio, which is Greek for "a look back." As a nationally ranked publication, Recensio is managed solely by students. Staffers include editors, graphic designers, copywriters, photographers, bookkeepers, and clerical help. There's a notice for staff at the beginning of the year posted around campus, or you can call 513-529-5555 to find out more or visit their website.
Are there publications for artists, poets, essayists, and short story writers?
Inklings is the undergraduate literary magazine that comes out two or three times a year and publishes the best of student poetry, essays, short stories, and artwork. You can get experience reviewing and editing others—writing, selecting material for publication, working on layouts, and other aspects of publishing. For more information about Inklings, contact the English department at 513-529-5221.
What other student publications are available?
Released twice per semester, Miami Quarterly (MQ) is a student-run entertainment magazine delivered to various locations on and off campus. If you are interested in working for MQ, you can contact a member of the staff at MQMagazine@gmail.com.
