Audition Requirements - Brass

All auditions for brass instruments include playing scales and sight-reading in addition to performing the music selections listed below.

Trumpet

Choose two selections of contrasting styles, one should demonstrate technical facility and the other should demonstrate beauty of tone. The compositions listed below are suggestions, and repertoire of equal or more advanced difficulty may be substituted.

  • One or more movements from a standard concerto (Haydn, Hummel)
  • Works by Barat, Arutunian, Denmark, Fiocco (Allegro, ed. Fitzgerald), Ropartz, Corelli (Sonata VIII), Handel (Aria con variazioni)

Horn

Choose two selections of contrasting styles, one should demonstrate technical facility and the other should demonstrate beauty of tone. The compositions listed below are suggestions, and repertoire of equal or more advanced difficulty may be substituted.

  • One or more movements from a standard contest concerto (e.g., concertos by Mozart or Strauss, Morceau de Concert by Saint-Saens, Villanelle by Dukas)
  • Etudes by Belloli, Gallay, Kling, or Kopprasch

Trombone

Choose two selections of contrasting styles, one should demonstrate technical facility and the other should demonstrate beauty of tone. The compositions listed below are suggestions, and repertoire of equal or more advanced difficulty may be substituted.

  • Sonatas by Galliard, any two contrasting movements, Concerto for Trombone by Grafe, Morceau Symphonique by Guilmant, or Andante and Allegro by Barat
  • Melodious Etudes, Vol. 1, by Bordogni-Rochut; Sixty Studies for Trombone by Kopprasch

Euphonium

Choose two selections of contrasting styles, one should demonstrate technical facility and the other should demonstrate beauty of tone.

  • One or more movements of a Baroque sonata such as Sonata No. 1 or No. 5 (arr. for trombone) by Galliard, Sonata in C Major (arr. for trombone) by Marcello, and Sonata in F Major (arr. for trombone) by Corelli
  • A Romantic work such as Five Pieces in Folk Style by Schumann, Morceau de Concert by Saint-Saens, and Four Preludes by Shostakovich
  • A post-Romantic work such as Introduction and Serenade by Barat, Morceau Symphonique by Guilmant, Suite for Baritone by Haddad, Sonatina by Presser, Andante and Allegro by Ropartz, and Bride of the Waves by Clarke

Tuba

Choose two selections of contrasting styles, one should demonstrate technical facility and the other should demonstrate beauty of tone.

  • One or more movements of a Baroque work such as Air and Bouree by Bach, Sonata in C Major by Marcello, Sonata in F Major by Telemann, Sonata in F Major by Corelli
  • A Classic or Romantic work such as Variations on a Theme by Handel by Beethoven, Concerto No. 3 for horn by Mozart, Preludes, Op. 28 by Chopin
  • A post-Romantic work such as Suite for Tuba by Haddad, Minute Sketches by Presser, Concertino by Frackenpohl, Scherzo for tuba by Bartles, Introduction and Serenade (trombone) by Barat, Sonata for trombone by McKay, Lyric Suite (slow and fast movements) by White
