The current study discusses examples of these models, either proposed or implemented, across four countries or economic blocks—France, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States. In addition, to understand the importance of providing funding for education and training to adults...

Jobs at risk of automation in the USA: Implications for community colleges.

01/25/2021

Advancing technologies such as artificial intelligence and robots are steadily replacing jobs in the USA. Continuous skill-upgrading and re-skilling are critical for workers to remain employable throughout their careers. In these social and economic contexts, community colleges play significant roles to provide workforce education and training because of their open admission, lower tuition, and shorter and more specific occupational programs compared to four-year universities. However, the...

Organizational factors associated with retention of direct care workers: A comparison of nursing homes and assisted living facilities

09/14/2020

Low retention of direct care workers (DCWs), either certified nursing assistants in nursing homes (NH) or personal care assistants in assisted living (AL), continues to be an unresolved problem. While numerous studies have examined predictors of DCW retention in NHs, little attention has been paid to differences between settings of long-term care. This study compares the predictors of DCW retention rates across both settings.

COVID-19 pandemic: Exacerbating racial/ethnic disparities in long-term services and supports

05/31/2020

What services are available and where racial and ethnic minorities receive long-term services and supports (LTSS) have resulted in a lower quality of care and life for racial/ethnic minority users. These disparities are only likely to worsen during the COVID-19 pandemic, as the pandemic has disproportionately affected racial and ethnic minority communities both in the rate of infection and virus-related mortality. By examining these disparities in the context of the pandemic, this article brings...

Nursing home social services and post-acute care: Does more qualified staff improve behavioral symptoms and reduce antipsychotic drug use?

03/01/2020

An increasing number of post-acute care patients are admitted to skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) with behavioral symptoms such as wandering and rejecting care, which can interfere with care and place a patient at risk of social isolation or injury. This study examines whether increasing the qualifications of social service staff through using a greater proportion of qualified social workers (QSWs) instead of paraprofessionals improves patients' behavioral symptoms and reduces the use of...

They comprise the majority of workplace fatalities for occupations involved in transportation/material moving and are one of the leading causes of death for many occupations which involve driving, but where driving is not the primary job duty. Nonfatal work-related MVCs also have substantial injury and economic consequences for workers and employers. This study used data from...

Occupational licensing of social services and nursing home quality: A regression discontinuity approach

06/25/2019

Social service departments in nursing homes can be staff with either qualified social workers or unlicensed paraprofessionals. Using a federal regulation which requires nursing homes with 121+ beds to employ at least one full-time qualified social worker, this study used a regression discontinuity design to explore whether nursing homes just above the 121-bed threshold have social service departments with similar staffing levels and composition as just below the threshold.

In an age of fast-paced economic and technological change, ongoing investment in human capital in the form of skill training represents a potential strategy for improving older workers’ employment prospects. However, empirical evidence is lacking on the relationship between basic...
