Scott PomeroyScott Pomeroy (see below) was recently elected to the National Academy of Medicine (see Scott is a 1975 graduate of our department and is currently Neurologist in Chief, Boston Children’s Hospital and Bronson Crothers Professor in Neurology, Harvard Medical School.

Bryce NickelsBryce Nickels (BA Chemistry 1995) was recently profiled in a blog about his research in the area of transcription ( After Miami, Bryce earned his PhD in microbiology from Harvard and is currently an Associate Professor of Microbiology at Rutgers University (

Ken McGowanKen McGowan (M.S. Chemistry 1988; Ph.D. Chemistry 1991) is currently the President and CEO of Westmoreland Advanced Materials in Monessen, PA and Chief Technology Officer at CAberTech, Inc.  See the following link for a video of Dr. McGowan talking about his company ( Dr. McGowan’s advisor at Miami was Gil Pacey.

Nicole FisherNicole Fisher (BS Biochemistry, 2014) was recently awarded an NIH Predoctoral Fellowship. Nicole is currently a Ph.D. candidate at the Center for Neuroscience Drug Discovery Center at Vanderbilt University. Her advisor at Miami was Chris Makaroff.

Jessica GephartJessica Gephart won an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship for Ph.D. at the University of Virginia and is now a postdoc at the University of Maryland was selected as one of the 2017 “18 of the last 9” young alumni at Miami University (18 of last 9). Jessica was an undergraduate researcher in the lab of Stacey Lowery Bretz.

Yongming DengYongming Deng (Ph.D. Chemistry 2014) has accepted a tenure-track Assistant Professor position at Western Kentucky University. After Miami, Yongming was a postdoctoral associate at the University of Maryland for 1 year, and then was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Texas at San Antonio (2015-2017). Dr. Deng’s advisor at Miami was Hong Wang.

B. Layla Musial (PhD Chemistry, 2012) has accepted a tenure-track Assistant Professor position at the University of Liverpool, UK. After Miami, Layla was a postdoctoral scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory from 2013-2017. Dr. Musial’s advisor at Miami was Jim Cox.

Justin Carmel (PhD Chemistry, 2015) has accepted a tenure-track Assistant Professor position at Florida International University. After Miami, Justin was a postdoctoral associate at Michigan State University working with Professor Melanie Cooper (2015-2017). Dr. Carmel’s advisor at Miami was Ellen Yezierski.
