After our January 2017 Newsletter, we were pleased to hear from several alumni and friends. Please let us know what you are doing.

Adam ReisAdam Reis (BA Chemistry 2010) is an associate at Irwin IP. After Miami, Adam worked as an Associate Chemist at Patheon Pharmaceuticals in Cincinnati. He attended Chicago-Kent College of Law and received his J.D. in 2015.

Chen LingChen Ling (PhD 2014) currently works at Axalta, and she presented a talk entitled “"Application of ATR-FTIR Microspectroscopy in Understanding Interlayer Migration of Automotive Coatings," at the PITTCON Conference and Expo on March 8. Chen earned her PhD working with Andy Sommer.

Christine HajdinDr. Christine Hajdin (BS Biochemistry 2008) presented a Departmental Seminar on April 20th. Christine is an Investigator at Novartis in Boston. While at Miami, Christine conducted research in the lab of Michael Crowder. After Miami, Christine earned her PhD from the University of North Carolina (2013) and then became a Data Scientist at Explorys, Inc.

Sarah Stewart de RamirezDr. Sarah Stewart de Ramirez (BS Chemistry 1998) and Scott Levin (BS Engineering/Industrial Management 2002) presented a Departmental Seminar on April 27th. Sarah is currently the Assistant Director for Global Emergency Services and an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at Johns Hopkins University. While at Miami, Sarah conducted research in Andy Sommer’s lab. After Miami, Sarah completed 2 years of health systems research for the US Agency for International Development in Namibia. Then, she was awarded a Marshall scholarship and earned a Masters in Health Economics and a Masters in Public Health from the London School of Economics and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, respectively. She earned her MD from the Harvard School of Medicine in 2008. While at Harvard, she was a Senior Global Health Fellow for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Gary EmmertProfessor Gary Emmert (Ph.D. 1999) – we recently heard from Gary, who is currently Professor and Chair in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Memphis ( Gary is also the CEO of Foundation Instruments (, a company that analyzes for trihalomethanes. While at Miami, Gary worked with Professor Gilbert Gordon.

Abraham Jon MollerLindsay MoritzAbraham (Jon) Moller (BS Microbiology, 2015; MS CMSB 2016) and Lindsay Moritz (BS Biochemistry and Zoology, 2015) received NSF Graduate Fellowships. Jon is current a graduate student at Emory, and Lindsay is a graduate student at the University of Michigan (

Megan MatthewsMegan Matthews (BS Chemistry, 2005) was recently hired as an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania. After Miami, Megan earned her PhD from Penn State University working in Marty Bollinger’s lab. She was then a Merck Helen Hay Whitney Postdoctoral fellow at the Scripps Research Institute in San Diego (

Han Dong (BS Chemistry 2013) enrolled in the MS program in Chemical Engineering at Columbia University. Han worked in Scott Hartley’s research lab while at Miami.

Aaron CoeyAaron Coey (BS Biochemistry and Microbiology, 2011) is currently at Stanford finishing his PhD, working in the labs of Joe Puglisi and Elisabeth Puglisi. He will be beginning a postdoctoral position at CalTech in Bjorkman’s lab. While at Miami, Aaron worked in Gary Lorigan’s lab.

Marc CarporiniMarc Caporini (BS Biochemistry, 2003; PhD Physical Chemistry MIT 2008; Postdoc EPFL 2009-2011) was recently a co-author on a paper published in Nature ( Marc has recently done well since earning his Bachelors degree at Miami. After earning his PhD at MIT and being a postdoc at EPFL, he was hired as a DNP Research Scientist at Bruker Biospin from 2011-15. He is now a Scientist at Amgen in Boston, MA.

Stacey Lowery Bretz visitStacey Lowery Bretz presented a seminar at Kenyon College in March, and she met with 3 alumni of the Department: Kerry Lucas Rouhier, Assistant Professor of Chemistry (PhD 2008) and Matt Rouhier, Visiting Assistant Professor of Chemistry (PhD 2008). Kerry and Matt worked in the lab of John Hawes. Stacey also visited with Miami alum picture, B.S. 1996. Attached is a photo (from left to right: John, Stacey, Matt, Kerry).
