Dr. DiPiero teaches courses in American studies, popular culture, and music. He has also taught private percussion lessons and group improvisation workshop.


His research theorizes the connections between improvisation, improvised music, and everyday life by combining perspectives from jazz studies, musicology, and critical cultural theory. His work has appeared in Critical Studies in Improvisation/Études critiques en improvisation, the collection Rancière and Music (forthcoming, Edinburgh University Press), and boundary 2 online. Currently, Dan is developing his book project, and is also working on an essay about feminist indie-rock and affect.

Other Activities

Dan remains active as an improvising musician.
