Adrian Gaskins Memorial Scholarship Fund

Adrian Gaskins Memorial & Scholarship

photo of Adrian GaskinsIn honor of our friend and colleague Adrian Gaskins, Lecturer of Global and Intercultural Studies in the American Studies and Black World Studies programs, who died unexpectedly in January 2016, the Department of Global and Intercultural Studies, the American Studies Program, and the Black World Studies Program started the Adrian Gaskins Memorial Scholarship Fund.

The Adrian Gaskins Memorial Scholarship Fund will be awarded to Miami University students participating in any study abroad program. There is a strong preference to select students of historically underrepresented populations, with financial need, who have not previously studied abroad.

The scholarship shall be awarded by the Office of Student Financial Assistance based on the nomination received from a selection committee within the Department of Global and Intercultural Studies. GPA will not be a disqualifying factor in awarding this scholarship.

The Gaskins Scholarship will be awarded twice annually (once per semester); fall application deadline for Winter 2017 J-Term study-abroad programs is October 1, 2016:

For Adrian, home was Covington, Kentucky. He received his BA at the University of Kentucky, his MA at Michigan State University, and was a PhD candidate at the University of Minnesota at the time of his death. He was a Thurgood Marshall Fellow at Dartmouth College and a Carter G. Woodson Research Fellow at the University of Virginia. Adrian then joined Miami in 2008 as a Heanon Wilkins Fellow.

With professor emeritus Eugene Metcalf, Adrian Gaskins co-directed the "Americans Abroad" summer workshop in Paris and London, which combined popular culture, particularly art, music, and dance with the history of the African diasporic presences in England and France. Adrian's research interests were in the fields of African Diaspora studies (especially salsa and hip-hop), American studies, critical race theory, and popular culture.

On Friday, February 12, 2016, the faculty in the Department of Global and Intercultural Studies and in the College of Arts & Science at Miami University gathered to honor the life and legacy of Adrian Gaskins and announced the memorial scholarship fund.
