Scholarships and Awards

Undergraduate Enrichment Funding

An undergraduate student needs to apply at the very least a month before the funds are needed if at all possible. Any undergraduate in good standing with the University may apply for these funds at any time during an academic year. Students may also apply more than once during an academic year as long as it is for separate events. The main purpose of this fund is to give financial assistance to undergraduate students wishing to travel to a conference or to cover expenses with their research project. Please note that to receive assistance with conference travel, the student does not have to present a paper at the conference.

Expenses that may be covered by this fund:

  • Conference Registration
  • Airfare / Bus Fare / Taxi Fare / Train Fare
  • Mileage Reimbursement
  • Lodging while in Overnight Status
  • Meals while Traveling (per diem)
  • Entry Fee to Museums or Special Event if part of Research Project
  • Books needed for Research Project
  • Copies of Research Material made at a Library

GRAMELAC Study Abroad Grant Application

The Department of German, Russian, Asian, and Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures offers financial assistance to Miami University students participating in study abroad programs; preference is given to students participating in the department's own programs.  Any Miami University student planning to enroll in a study abroad program for any semester is eligible to apply.  A Faculty Award Committee will select the recipients and determine the amount of each scholarship based on merit and financial need.

Please fill out the application form completely and to the best of your knowledge. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Application submission deadlines are October 1 for students planning to participate in a Winter or Spring term study abroad program or workshop and April 1 for students planning to participate in a Summer term or Fall semester study abroad program or workshop. Be sure you are applying for the correct term deadline!

The Marion Lee Miller Award

Available distribution awarded to outstanding students in GRAMELAC based on achievement. Nominations are made by the Chair to the Office of Student Financial Aid. The first award was given in the 1993-94 academic year. The Marion Lee Miller Award is made to the student considered the most excellent at each of the four instructional levels (100, 200, 300 and 400). Languages and sections that currently receive the Marion Lee Miller Award are as follows:

The Jacques Breitenbucher Scholar-Leader Award

The Jacques Breitenbucher Scholar-Leader Award is given every other year to an outstanding female continuing German major, who will be named a Scholar-Leader and live rent-free in a student room in Stoddard Hall. The award is an annual distribution to an upper-class student majoring in Germanic or Slavic languages.

Austrian Program Scholarship

Available annual distribution to provide scholarships to Miami University students choosing to study in Austria. Nomination by Austrian Program Scholarship Committee to the Office of Student Financial Aid.
