Work with Strategies 360

For Summer 2017, Rachel has an internship with Strategies 360, a government affairs and communications firm in Washington D.C. Strategies 360. The firm works closely with lawmakers and other government officials to advocate effectively for client needs, including obtaining federal grants and funds and supporting the passage of key legislation or policy changes. Rachel first heard about this internship from POL's very own Dr. Patrick Haney and applied after receiving some encouragement from other POL professors. During her internship, Rachel stayed up to date on legislative hearings and policy news, created press clips for clients, researched grants and funding opportunities, contacted members of Congress and wrote memoranda for clients.

For Rachel "this internship has allowed me to experience politics beyond lecture halls and the pages of a textbook," and giving her "a front row seat to the policy process has really changed my perspective on the function of government and the means by which policy is crafted."

Beyond Miami and Looking Back

Initially, Rachel was interested in Miami for Swimming and Diving, but it was her choice of a Political Science Major that helped her focus her career path. Her double major of Political Science and Spanish Linguistics has helped her understand the social and economic issues facing Spanish-speakers arriving in the United States. In the future, Rachel hopes to continue learning and advance her research skills by pursuing an MPP. While she wants to return to her home state of Minnesota, Rachel is also fascinated with other cultures and languages that may take her abroad to possibly Spanish-speaking countries.

Rachel's experience at Miami has taught her the value of exploring various interests. She states that "my time here has taught me that hard work fosters engaging discussions and rewarding opportunities; staying true to Miami, I have come to love learning and honor achievement."
