Fall Semester 2019

E. Phillips Knox Distinguished Teaching Award

Application Deadline: October ??, 2019

This award recognizes creative, innovative and engaging teaching methods at the undergraduate level. This award is conferred upon faculty members whose achievements unequivocally merit the recognition for excellence in teaching. Nominees should be creative and innovative educators with a demonstrated record of fostering critical thinking and engagement of undergraduates along one or more of the following dimensions:

  1. learning through inquiry, experimentation, and discovery,
  2. heightened awareness and appreciation of cultural diversity and the importance of global contexts, and
  3. active participation in experiential learning and community partnerships.

Award winners receive a professional expense allocation of $3,000 in support of their teaching and for professional activities related to the scholarship of teaching and learning. Faculty candidates for the Knox Award are nominated by their peers. Faculty must be nominated by October 15, and those who are nominated and eligible will be invited to submit an application packet by February 1. Selection of finalists will be made by March 1 and awarded in April at the Spring University Awards Ceremony.

Benjamin Harrison Medallion

Presented in the spring semester, the Benjamin Harrison Medallion Award is one of the most significant recognitions Miami has to offer faculty for extraordinary contributions related to teaching, research, and service. Nominees for this award must be a current member of Miami’s faculty, hold the rank of professor with at least eight (8) years of service to Miami and exemplify the best in the teacher-scholar model through the following criteria: evidence of the highest standards of teaching and advancement of student learning, attainment of national or international stature in an academic discipline or an administrative area, record of outstanding and diverse forms of service to Miami, recognition of influence beyond his or her primary discipline as evidenced by distinction in endeavors that have served the profession, the university, the public or other disciplines exceptionally well. The call for nominations is issued by the Awards and Recognitions Committee, an advisory committee of University Senate. Nominations for this award must address the criteria mentioned above and must include a letter of nomination that specifies how the nominee meets the criteria of the award and the nominee's current CV.

University Distinguished Professor

Application Deadline: November ?, 2020 (nominations not accepted in 2019)

The title of University Distinguished Professor is conferred upon those faculty members whose achievements unequivocally merit the recognition. The selection process involves a rigorous appraisal, including requests of nationally and internationally known scholars in the appropriate discipline outside Miami University to place the nominee among other distinguished scholars of national and international reputation. University Distinguished Professors receive an annual stipend for conducting research and other professional activities. The call for nominations for the University Distinguished Professor Award is issued every other year (years beginning with even numbers: 2018-2019, 2020-2021, etc.), alternating with the Distinguished Service Award. It is presented to no more than two recipients.

Distinguished Service Award

The Distinguished Service Award is one of the most significant recognition that Miami has to offer for employees who have made a significant impact on the life and mission of Miami University. The nominee should have at least twelve (12) years of service to Miami University. Consideration for this award also requires two letters of nomination: one each from people representing at least two distinct University constituencies (e.g., departments, divisions, student organizations, staff organizations). These letters should convey the various positions the candidate has held and also describe in detail ways in which this individual has made a significant contribution to a broad community at Miami University. The call for nominations for is issued every other year (years beginning with odd numbers: 2019-2020, 2021-2022, etc.), alternating with the University Distinguished Professor Award. It is presented to no more than two recipients.

Excellence in Career Development Award

Application Deadline: December ?, 2019

The Excellence in Career Development Award recognizes faculty who actively support the development of the Miami University career community. This may occur through incorporating career development and career advising into their teaching and student advising, seeking out partnerships with employers, or graduate/professional programs, the Center for Career Exploration & Success, and others who may provide internship, job, or graduate/professional school opportunities for students within his/her academic division or throughout the University. Nominees should spend a significant portion of their time providing exemplary direct delivery of career development services to undergraduate students. All faculty who have engaged in helping students in their career exploration and job search process, whether it is formally a part of one’s job or not, are eligible for nomination. Consideration for this award requires one letter of nomination. The award may be given to one recipient from each school or college and will be accompanied by a $500 monetary award.

Spring Semester 2020

Excellence in Academic Advising

Application Deadline: February ?, 2020

The Provost's Excellence in Academic Advising Award recognizes faculty and staff members who spend a significant portion of their time providing exemplary direct delivery of academic advising services to undergraduate students and have exhibited exceptional leadership in advancing academic advising at Miami. Nominees should meet the following four criteria: (1) high quality of information and advice, (2) outstanding support of students, (3) accessibility to students, and (4) exceptional leadership in advising. All faculty and staff with responsibilities for student academic advising are eligible for nomination. Consideration for this award requires at least two letters of nomination who provide detailed evidence of effective advising qualities and practices that distinguish the nominee as an outstanding adviser and leader in academic advising.

The Undergraduate Academic Advising Council reviews the nominations and makes recommendations to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, who makes the final selection. The award will be given to one to three recipients, typically to one faculty recipient and one staff recipient.

Miami University Distinguished Scholar Awards

Application Deadline: March ?, 2020

These awards honor faculty whose sustained excellence in research or other creative activity has brought them prominence in their fields. Up to three Distinguished Scholar Awards may be made, with one in the humanities and creative arts (CAH), one in the applied and natural sciences (ANS), and one in business, education, and social sciences (BESS). Any awards bestowed in a given year will be conferred on faculty members with a substantial and continuing record of outstanding scholarly or creative work. Nominations should be inclusive with respect to the faculty member's accomplishments, but special consideration will be given to a nominee's record in research and creative activities while at Miami. Each recipient will receive a grant of $2,000 for the pursuit of further research or creative endeavor and will be honored publicly.

Miami University Junior Faculty Scholar Awards

Application Deadline: March ?, 2020

These awards honor faculty who have demonstrated great potential in research or artistry and have achieved significant standing in their fields. Candidates for the Junior Faculty Scholar Award must have received their highest degree no more than eight years before the time of nomination. Up to three awards may be made, with one in the humanities and creative arts (CAH), one in the applied and natural sciences (ANS), and one in business, education, and social sciences (BESS). Any awards bestowed in a given year will be conferred on faculty members with a substantial and continuing record of outstanding scholarly or creative work. Each recipient will receive a grant of $2,000 for the pursuit of further research or creative endeavor and will be honored publicly. John Jahnke-Ray White Award | Awarded periodically To be awarded to a faculty member in the Department of Psychology for distinguished leadership and service. Criteria for the award will include a strong record of continuing service and leadership activities that have benefited the Department of Psychology. The selection of the recipient will be made by the Chair in consultation with the Department Steering Committee. The faculty member may use the award for any professional activity.
