If you would like to declare a minor in Gerontology, please contact the advisor, Dr. Kate de Medeiros at

Rapid and significant growth of the older population is a global phenomenon; virtually every nation in the world has become, or is in the process of becoming, an aging society. The aging of society has an impact on every aspect of our lives and on all of our social institutions.

Miami University offers three minors in gerontology, each with a different focus. The minor in gerontology provides a comprehensive understanding of the aging processes. The minor in aging and health is designed for students from a variety of disciplines and with a variety of health-related career goals. The minor in aging and public policy is designed to educate you about complex social issues and equip you to respond with informed sensitivity to individual, family, community, societal, and global challenges of aging. Each minor in gerontology requires 19 hours of coursework, including GTY 440.G, a capstone course that provides you the opportunity to apply what you have learned in the classroom in an organization or agency that works on behalf of older adults.
