Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology  Graduate Program Strategic Plan for 2016-2021

The Master’s program in Speech Pathology is a program run by devoted, energetic, professionals dedicated to their students, patients, and profession. The program is unique to the University with a combined mission of training students in a highly-technical and skilled profession, conducting research in a rapidly-evolving field, and operating a professional and teaching clinic serving the University and the surrounding community.

Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology Mission Statement: The Miami University Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology (SPA) is committed to helping students develop superior critical thinking and clinical skills through an integration of academic information with research and clinical experience.  These clinical skills will also serve the speech, language, and swallowing, and hearing needs of the individuals in our community.

Department Goal 1:  The department will exceed compliance with national and state standards of accreditation and certification, and procure sufficient staffing and financial resources to operate the department and clinic.

Objectives:

1. 100% percent of students will be eligible for American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA) certification, Ohio state licensure, and Ohio Department of Education licensure as shown by a passing score on the Praxis II Exam and successful degree completion.

2. Maintain sufficient number of faculty and staff employed by the SPA department and expand where possible to strengthen the clinical and research programs

3. 100% of students with successful completion of the required knowledge and skills standards as outlined in the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) standards and the ASHA Standards for Clinical Certification.

4. Complete regular self-study to evaluate program outcomes from multiple sources (students, alumni, off-campus supervisors, employers, and the community) and to continuously improve program content and goals.

5. Maintain sufficient funds to provide students and faculty with high quality clinical training experiences, continuing education, and research opportunities.

Strategies:

1. Provide all needed (and where possible, exceed) requirements to guarantee ASHA certification, Ohio state licensure, and Ohio Department of Education licensure eligibility for program graduates

2. Advocate for effectively maintaining the appropriate level of faculty and staff positions and for the successful replacement of open positions.

3. Sustain adequate financial resources by communicating effectively with the university administration for the effective management of the Miami University Speech and Hearing Clinic and to support technology and equipment for both teaching and research.

4. Complete regular review cycles of curriculum, student and supervisor feedback from off-campus practicum sites, exit interviews/surveys, and graduate/alumni surveys, employer surveys, and community forums.

Department Goal 2:  The department will provide the students with a comprehensive educational program, research and learning opportunities, as well as the highest quality clinical experiences and learning both on- and off-campus, in a supportive environment.

Objectives:

1. Offer an academically and clinically rigorous curriculum that fosters critical thinking, understanding of ethnic and cultural diversity, and emphasizes evidence-based practice.

2. Offer a curriculum that responds to the changing dynamics of the profession and health care and provide interprofessional learning experiences. 

3. Provide superior clinical experiences for students through exposure to varied and diverse patient populations at the Miami University Speech and Hearing clinic and practicum sites within the community.

4. Recruit high qualified faculty and promote development of current faculty to be leaders in their area of expertise to expose our students to the most current trends and relevant topics in the field and student participation in high impact research for the field.

Strategies:

1. Integrate academic and clinical experiences to maximize continuity of learning between theory and practice.

2. Faculty with clinical certification will be actively involved in clinical cases within their areas of expertise. 

3. Provide a variety of clinical experiences for students by maintaining a large client base and 1st year clinical experiences as well as recruiting efforts for diverse clients (diversity of disorders and ethnic/race diversity)

4. Incorporate clinical and scientific writing measures to maximize student competency

5. Continue collaboration with off-campus supervisors to facilitate transition between on- and off campus clinical learning for students

6. Continue evidence-based practice (EBP) information in all courses and clinical experiences.

7. Seek out high quality interprofessional learning experiences for students.

8. Maintain recruitment efforts to attract diverse students and faculty.

9. Support faculty and staff who seek out high quality continuing education and leadership opportunities within the field with financial support and resources (GA assistance, release time, and travel funds to attend meetings).

10. Provide faculty mentored research opportunities for students seeking advanced scientific investigation.

Assessment of Strategic Plan Objectives: The Department Graduate Program Committee will evaluate the success, challenges, and opportunities relative to the goals and objectives once each year and present the findings to the Department faculty in a written report during a faculty meeting.
