Scholarships and Awards

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese is pleased to announce the following awards and scholarships:

The Glenn Barr Scholarship

These scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic achievement and need to Spanish majors of junior or senior class standing. Criteria for appilcation submission:

  1. A personal essay in Spanish is required outlining the applicant's academic achievement and academic success and why you should be given this award.
  2. Two letters of recommendation, one of which must come from a faculty member in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese

The Willis Knapp Jones Award

These awards are to be used by students majoring in Spanish who will be studying abroad during the next academic year or semester, or during the summer session. Criteria for appilcation submission:

  1. A personal essay in Spanish is required stating the applicant's objectives and expectations for study in Spain or Latin America. 
  2. Two letters of recommendation, one of which must come from a faculty member in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese

The Timothy J. Rogers Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate student of sophomore, junior, or senior class standing on the basis of academic merit. Recipients must be enrolled in an accredited academic program in Spain during the semester(s) he/she receives the scholarship. Criteria for appilcation submission:

  1. Applicants must be officially enrolled as a major in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese.
  2. Applicants must have taken courses in Spanish at the 300 level or above.
  3. A personal essay in Spanish is required stating the applicant's objectives and expectations for study in Spain.
  4. Two letters of recommendation, one of which must come from a faculty member in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese

The Irvin Essay Awards

Awarded to the best essay submitted by an undergraduate student. Undergraduate essays should be 3-5 pages written in Spanish on any aspect of Hispanic culture (personal experience, literature, linguistics).  

The author's name must not be printed on the essay pages.  Your identification will be verified with your electronic application.
