"The Miami Plan made it easy for me to find a major that fit what I was planning on doing for the rest of my life. Luckily, I got 'stuck on' American Studies and I never looked back. So many classes across so many disciplines qualify for the major. AMS also allowed me to create my own 'major' and sell myself for the type of job I wanted.
"I made some job connections through friends of friends and asking around for available opportunities. Also, I am the kind of person that always needs to be doing something. I never spent a summer at Miami without an internship or a job.
"In PR not only is your education valued, your experience is valued just as much, so I continued to fish for internships. After I worked at Pixar the summer before my junior year, I knew I wanted to work in the film industry. In an effort to gain the skills that I recognized were valuable, I began to take classes within American Studies and outside of the program's core classes that focused on film studies and public relations.
"My mass communication professor recommended the University of Southern California's graduate program in strategic public relations at the Annenberg School of Communications and Journalism. I applied to USC and was accepted. In grad school, I interned at The GRAMMY Museum and with Konnect PR, a boutique agency that specializes in representing children's clothing brands, food, restaurants, and luxury spas. I was also involved with Trojan Vision, the on-campus TV station that broadcasts across Los Angeles.
"During grad school, I applied for a summer internship with Lucasfilm. Even though I didn't get the job, I kept in contact with their HR team. A few weeks before graduation, I interviewed for the job I currently have. I learned I had the position only 3 days before graduation!"
