Undergraduate Requirements

Trumpet

  • Two selections of contrasting styles: one that demonstrates technical facility and the other that demonstrates beauty of tone. The compositions listed below are suggestions, and repertoire of equal or more advanced difficulty may be substituted.
    • One or more movements from a standard concerto (Haydn, Hummel)
    • Works by Barat, Arutunian, Denmark, Fiocco (Allegro, ed. Fitzgerald), Ropartz, Corelli (Sonata VIII), Handel (Aria con variazioni)
  • Scales and sight-reading

Horn

  • Two selections of contrasting styles: one that demonstrates technical facility and the other that demonstrates beauty of tone. The compositions listed below are suggestions, and repertoire of equal or more advanced difficulty may be substituted.
    • One or more movements from a standard contest concerto (e.g., concertos by Mozart or Strauss, Morceau de Concert by Saint-Saens, Villanelle by Dukas)
    • Etudes by Belloli, Gallay, Kling, or Kopprasch
  • Scales and sight-reading

Trombone

  • Two selections of contrasting styles: one that demonstrates technical facility and the other that demonstrates beauty of tone. The compositions listed below are suggestions, and repertoire of equal or more advanced difficulty may be substituted.
    • Sonatas by Galliard, any two contrasting movements, Concerto for Trombone by Grafe, Morceau Symphonique by Guilmant, or Andante and Allegro by Barat

Graduate Requirements (Master of Music in Performance only)

Trumpet

  • Solos chosen from the standard senior recital literature (e.g., concerti by Haydn and Hummel; sonatas by Hindemith, Lauridson, and Ewazen; works by Enesco, Arutunian, Jolivet, Tomasi; Baroque literature by Albinoni, Fasch)
  • Sight-reading

Horn

  • Prepare the following solos:
    • 1st movement from Concerto #2 or Concerto #4 by Mozart
    • Adagio and Allegro by Schumann
    • 1st movement from Hindemith’s Sonata
  • Applicants to the master’s degree in music performance are also required to prepare the following excerpts: Till Eulenspiegel by Strauss; Long Call from Siegfried by Wagner; Symphony No. 5 (2nd movement) by Tchaikovsky; and Symphony No. 5, obbligato horn, by Mahler
  • Scales and sight-reading

Trombone

  • Two compositions of contrasting styles that best demonstrate your ability, using music from the lists below or music of comparable difficulty. Both compositions may be from the solo repertoire, or one may be a solo and the other an orchestral excerpt.
    • Tenor Trombone: Examples of repertoire include Ballade by Martin, Concertino by Larsson, Concerto by Tomasi, Ballade by Bozza, Deux Danses by Defay, and Fantasy by Creston. Orchestral excerpts include Hungarian March by Berlioz, Tuba mirum from Mozart’s Requiem, Bolero by Ravel, Symphony No. 3 by Saint-Saëns, Symphony No. 3 (4th movement) by Schumann, Ride of the Valkyries by Wagner
    • Bass Trombone: Examples of repertoire include Concerto by Spillman, Concerto by Lebedev, Fantasia Concertante by Casterede, and Prelude et Allegro by Bozza. Orchestral excerpts include Hungarian March by Berlioz, Creation (No. 26) by Haydn, Symphony No.7 (1st movement) by Mahler, Symphony No. 3 (4th movement) by Schumann, Ride of the Valkyries and Das Rheingold by Wagner.
  • Scales and arpeggios in all keys, and sight-reading

Euphonium

  • Prepare the following solos:
    • One or more movements of Flute Fantasy by Telemann
    • One or more movements of Concerto for Trombone by Rimsky-Korsakoff
    • A modern work such as Fantasy by Jacob, Concerto by Linkola
  • Scales and sight-reading

Tuba

  • Prepare the following solos:
    • One or more movements of a major sonata or concerto.
    • One or more movements of a baroque transcription.
    • Three or more orchestral excerpts.
