Master of Music in Performance

  1. To apply to the Master of Music in Performance degree program, you must have completed undergraduate courses equivalent to a bachelor's degree in music performance.
  2. You must submit to the Department of Music
  • A brief statement describing the personal and professional objectives to be served by a master's degree from Miami University.
  • Letters from three people recommending your admission to graduate study in music.
  1. Finally, you must complete a successful audition in the major instrument or voice. More information may be found on our Auditions page.

Master of Music in Music Education

The Master of Music in Music Education degree program is designed as a three-summer program and the summer term is 4 weeks in length. Some individual studies can be completed during the regular academic year (August through May). However, the core academic courses are only offered in the summers. The core courses are offered in a consistent three-summer rotation. Completion of the graduation project or electives may take some individuals longer than three summers.

Prior full-time teaching experience is required.

  1. To apply to the Master of Music in Music Education degree program, you must have completed undergraduate courses equivalent to a bachelor's degree in music education and earned state certification/licensure. (State certification/licensure can be from any U.S. state.)
  2. Submit to the Department of Music
    • A copy of the state certification/licensure.
    • A 300-500 word essay describing your philosophy of music education and how you put that into practice in your teaching position, and your personal and professional objectives to be served by a master's degree from Miami University.
    • Letters of recommendation from three people recommending you for graduate study in music.
    • A video recording (10-15 minutes in length) of a recent rehearsal or class. The primary focus of the recording should be on the teacher rather than on the students, and the recording should be of a single uninterrupted class. Please do not include more than five minutes of warm-up activities.
