Miami University Musicology Professor to Speak at UNC Greensboro Symposium

OXFORD, OH – The University of North Carolina at Greensboro is hosting a symposium on music, gender and protest in the 1960s this Friday, April 5. Miami professor of Musicology Tammy Kernodle will give the keynote address with a speech titled “My Name is Peaches!!!!  Black Women’s Anger and its Dissemination through 60’s Black Popular Music.”

Kernodle received her PhD in Music History from The Ohio State University. Throughout her career, she has focused on studying the different genres of African American music as well as the intersection of gender and popular music.

According to the event’s website, “this symposium draws out the significance of gender and protest in music of the 1960s and considers what cultural value that nexus continues to manifest.” Kernodle will deliver her address at 6 p.m. to close the symposium. Other highlights of the event include two concerts, one involving audience participation.
