Chinese carving gifted to Miami
Miami University was recently presented with a Chinese ornamental sculpture carved from a translucent celadon-green stone called “Xiuyan jade” (bowenite) mined in Liaoning Province, China. Depicting a school of fish swimming around the opening of a basket trap or creel, the symbolism of the work refers to the Chinese idea of prosperity and good fortune (????jixiang ruyi).

Spring at the art museum this year is more student-involved than ever before
For two of the three main exhibits at the Miami University Art Museum this spring, 18 Miami students either created art for display or curated the capstone exhibition, making this year the most active period for student involvement.

Professor Ann Wicks to speak at the Art Museum
Tuesday, February 3, 5:30 p.m. Figures in a Garden: The Ideal World in Chinese Art ~ Ann Barrott Wicks, Ph.D., Department of Art, Miami University Art historian Ann Barrott Wicks will explain the historical context and philosophical ideas underlying the work chosen for the exhibition of Chinese art at the Art Museum on view through June 27. She will highlight specific works from the show, recounting the surprising circumstances surrounding the acquisition and identification of some of the paintings.
