Oxford Chamber Series

Andres CardenesGrammy-nominated violinist Andrés Cárdenes makes his Oxford debut with a recital in Oxford Community Arts Center’s intimate ballroom. An intensely passionate and personally charismatic artist, Cuban-born Cárdenes has developed one of classical music’s most versatile careers.

As a solo violinist, Cárdenes has appeared on four continents with over 100 orchestras, including The Philadelphia Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and Moscow Philharmonic. As a chamber musician, Andrés has performed extensively in trios and quartets, as well as alongside artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, Pinchas Zukerman, and Leonard Slatkin. He has also garnered acclaim as a conductor, violist, and concertmaster, and recorded over two dozen albums.

In the first half of the program, Cárdenes will be joined by Miami University faculty pianist Bruce Murray for Bach’s Sonata in E for Violin and Clavier, BMV 1016 and Schubert’s Fantasie in C major, D. 934. In the second half, Miami string faculty Harvey Thurmer, Mary E.M. Harris, and Pansy Chang will join the duo to perform Brahms’ Piano Quintet in F minor, Op. 34.

“Hearing violinist Andres Cárdenes perform proves all the indulgent pleasure of consuming the biggest dessert on the tray—with neither the guilt nor the calories…Cárdenes stands out as a remarkable mature performer who still exudes unjaded affection for his repertory.” – Kenneth Herman, Los Angeles Times
