xd Careers

The xdMFA was founded in 2014. In 2018, it was re-launched as a distance-learning program with a curriculum focused on design research-informed experience design. Our first few graduates have entered careers in design research, interaction design, and design education. An MFA in Experience Design can empower graduates to pursue a wide range of career opportunities. Possible careers include

  • Experience Designer: at a design agency, startup, non-profit or in-house design group
  • Service Designer: at a design agency, startup, non-profit or in-house design group
  • Design Researcher: at a design agency, startup, non-profit or in-house design group
  • Design Educator: in experience, interaction, or service design
  • Design Leadership: as a Chief Experience Officer, Director of Experience Design, or Senior Experience Designer, or Creative Director
  • Partner or Civic Leader: in the non-profit sector who can lead service innovations that meet community needs

The xdMFA was designed to empower learners to advance their careers in experience design. This involves learning the knowledge, thinking, and skills necessary as designers continue to take a significant role in addressing highly complex challenges. Companies and organizations like Punchcut, R/GA, HUGE, Disney, Cincinnati Museum Center, Adaptive Path, Accenture, brightspot strategy, IDEO, Intuit, and Crown Equipment Corporation are just a few who have positions in experience design or seek those who have skills to develop design outcomes informed by progressive and solid research methods.
