General Engineering

General Engineering - No longer available to new students

From the class of 2024 forward, this degree is no longer offered to new students. Unlike the other engineering programs, this general engineering major is designed for students interested in pursuing non-technical career paths. It provides students with a rigorous introduction to the fundamentals of the engineering discipline and emphasizes problem-solving skills and comprehension of the role of engineering in modern society. The engineering major enables students to appreciate and comprehend engineering practice in the context of fields typically outside of engineering. The earned degree is a Bachelor of Science in Engineering.

Features of Miami’s program

Individual Attention

Students enjoy individual attention from faculty in small classes and hands-on laboratories.

Global Awareness

An international experience is integrated within the curricula, either through a series of internationally themed courses and projects or through a semester studying abroad. This international component is designed to provide the student with a significant international experience. This will enable the student to learn about other cultures, experience the basic elements of global communication, engage in interdisciplinary activities, and examine their liberal and professional education in global settings. The outcome of such an experience will prepare the student to work effectively in the global society.

Personalized Focus

While engineering fundamentals are an integral part of the program, it also provides flexibility so that students may tailor their elective choices to match long-term career interests.

Admission Requirements

There are no additional admission requirements for this program.

Course work

Strong foundation Science, engineering science, and mathematics courses are fundamental to all engineering. Courses in liberal arts, economics, and technical writing round out the education and prepare students with the flexibility they need to choose a variety of career options or future study in graduate school.

Students are also able to select from among many different electives, minors, and paths to different disciplines. Students can combine a minimum of nine electives with a thematic sequence to minor in a chosen area of interest, such as engineering, physics, chemistry, political science, and history. Students who are thinking of medical school may use these elective hours to fulfill premed requirements. Others who are interested in law may select political science courses for a pre-law path. Other concentration areas include (but are not limited to) health care, nursing, and language.

You should follow the plan for your catalog year, which is typically the first year you started at Miami. However, you have the option to change your catalog year. If you are unsure of what your catalog year is, you can find out by reviewing your Degree Audit Report (DAR) on BannerWeb.

Student Learning Outcomes:
