Purpose and Description

The purpose of this Faculty Learning Community (FLC) is to review and discuss best practices for creating an inclusive learning environment. Participants will explore the concept of accessible pedagogy and strategies for embedding these principles into teaching practices. Discussions will focus on the benefits of accessibility for all and broaden the scope beyond those with disabilities.

Topics covered will include:

  • Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
  • Assistive Technology Demonstrations
  • Creating Accessible Course Content
  • Accessible Technology Policy and Procurement
  • Miami Resources
    • Student Disability Services
    • AccessMU Center
    • University Libraries

This FLC will be a hands-on learning environment where faculty will examine their current courses to identify opportunities to improve accessibility. The participants will also receive support in implementing changes.

Activities

  • Meetings every 2-3 weeks
  • Review and discuss peer-reviewed literature to establish a scholarly foundation on the core principles of UDL and accessibility pedagogy
  • Design course content to improve accessibility

This FLC will be a hands-on learning environment where faculty will examine their current courses to identify opportunities to improve accessibility. The participants will also receive support in implementing changes. Miami's accessibility resources will be highlighted.

Meeting Times

This FLC will meet every three weeks. The preferred meeting times are Mondays from 3-5 pm or Thursdays from 2-4 pm.
