Purpose and Description

As the student and employee populations, constituents and community partners of Miami University are becoming more diverse, there is a growing need to strengthen the university's inclusivity in and out of the classroom and on all campuses. As part of this initiative, Miami is committed to expanding its faculty, staff and administrators' knowledge on issues of diversity and equity, enhancing cultural competencies and strengthen the practice of inclusion to create a community of diversity and inclusion allies, advocates and ambassadors.This Faculty Learning Community (FLC) supports Miami's mission of developing and improving ways to “promote and advance multicultural understanding and create and enhance initiatives that build cross-cultural skills, knowledge, and understanding” and providing employees with “increased and enhanced opportunities for career and professional development and training on diversity-related topics.”

Activities

These activities will be framed by the ultimate goal of designing and implementing an employee Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Certificate Course at Miami.

  • Engage in conversations and utilize university climate report to assess diversity training needs
  • Examine current employee D&I certificate programs at other institutions of higher education
  • Consult with leaders and experts in D&I topic areas and curriculum/workshop design
  • Research scholarly literature to select instructional methods for course goals & design
  • Design a D&I certificate training course for faculty, staff, and administrators
  • Develop implementation recommendations
  • Identify and gain commitment from Miami’s diversity topic area experts to serve as facilitators
  • Review assessment tools and make recommendations
  • Collaborate with university departments and colleges to obtain sponsorship, resources, and funding

Meeting Times

The dedicated participants of this FLC will meet every 3 weeks (lunch will be provided).
