Purpose and Description

This Faculty Learning Community (FLC) aims to gather faculty from across Miami to explore ways we can make publicly engaged scholarship and teaching more widely understood and practiced at Miami University

Many in academia recognize the benefit of faculty emerging from the "Ivory Tower" and partnering with communities to better understand and tackle the complex, multifaceted challenges facing society today. Publicly engaged scholarship and teaching are "defined by the collaboration between academics and individuals outside the academy … for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources in a context of partnership and reciprocity." (New England Resource Center for Higher Education, n.d.). Such efforts, however, often go unrecognized or are discouraged among pre-tenure faculty given their time-intensive nature. The scholarship of discovery, rather than engagement (Boyer 1995) still represents the unquestioned norm of scholarly excellence among most faculty.

Activities

  • Round-table discussion of seminal texts in this field from research journals and organizations like Imagining America and AAC&U that are promoting this model. Exploring articles or books from diverse disciplinary perspectives. We seek to build more shared vocabulary for this work across fields and disciplines.
  • Individual members starting or advancing progress on a research or teaching project that can be defined as having publicly-engaged elements. The research can be in the planning states; the teaching element can be a course you regularly teach or will teach in the future. We seek to support and develop our own best practices for this work.
  • Inviting Academic Deans from around MU to come and converse with us about how this work is regarded in P and T portfolios currently.
  • Guest scholar visit: Inviting in a nationally-known scholar in publicly engaged research/teaching.
  • If there is interest and sufficient energy, we may put together a White Paper on Publicly Engaged Scholarship and Teaching at Miami University as a way to summarize our learning and make some general recommendations for the campus.

Meeting Times

This FLC will meet 3:00-4:30 pm on the following Wednesdays during the fall semester (9/6. 9/13, 10/4, 10/25, 11/15, 12/6). Spring semester meetings will be scheduled at a later date.
