Community remembrance event for two lynchings that occurred in Oxford in 1877 (Mr. Sim Garnett) and 1892 (Mr. Henry Corbin). This ceremony aligns with the efforts of equal justice initiative (EJI), whose community remembrance projects, focused on reckoning with the legacy of racial terrorism in America, attempts to restore the dignity and humanity to those individuals and their families who perished during this tragic period of American history. A Fair and Equitable Campus | Kenya Ash, Mike Savnik and Denise Ison, Office of Equity and Equal Opportunity

This workshop will provide an overview of investigatory and employment compliance processes within the Office of Equity and Equal Opportunity that promote fairness and justice across Miami University’s campus. The audience will have an opportunity to ask questions.

Chinese Students at Miami | Chen Zhao, Confucius Institute

Learn to connect with international students through the crucial first step of proper name pronunciation. This session will also address some of the challenges facing Chinese students at Miami (i.e., cultural and educational differences).

It's On ALL of Us | Anondo Banerjee, Miami's Sexual & Interpersonal Violence Prevention Education & Outreach Coordinator, Office of Student Wellness 

The Center for Disease Control suggests using the Socio-Ecological Model to address sexual and interpersonal violence prevention. That means the problem should simultaneously be addressed on the individual, relationship, and community level. This session will be delving into the challenges and opportunities of addressing the issue on a community level, and give concrete steps that we can ALL take to address sexual and interpersonal violence.

LGBTQ+ Allyship Development | Hannah Thompson, Center for Student Diversity & Inclusion's LGBTQ+ Initiatives

This workshop will provide participants with the fundamental knowledge, awareness, language, and basic tips on how to be an ally to the LGBTQ+ community. Individuals participating in the workshop will define common LGBTQ+ terminology and understand the importance of using inclusive language, as well as gain empathy and build cultural respect. Participants will also have the opportunity to explore ways to create a more inclusive environment at Miami University and learn ways they can integrate strategies for becoming an active ally to the LGBTQ+ community within their role at the University. This is an introductory workshop on LGBTQ+ information and matters and modified content from the the Safe Zone Trainings offered at the institution.

First Amendment, Freedom of Expression and Public Institutions | Robin Parker and Rodney Coates

This workshop will address the First Amendment and campus free speech rights of faculty, staff and students. In addition, the session will include discussion of protected speech, hate speech, harassment and academic freedom.

Disability Etiquette | Cynthia Crews, Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities

This workshop will highlight how to create a comfortable work environment for all employees by awareness of respectful etiquette and proper language usage related to interactions with people with disabilities. The session also teaches attendees to anticipate situations which might occur in the workplace with people with disabilities.

Green Zone training helps faculty and staff understand and empathize with veterans by educating them about military culture and the struggles that veterans face as they transition from active duty military service to becoming a college student.

Communicating Across Differences: “Stepping Up” | Ron Scott and Bennyce Hamilton

Learn to hear, see and understand individuals that have a communication style that is different from your own.

Debunking Disguised Disabilities | Cynthia Crews, Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities

This interactive workshop is an engaging educational session that explores the fears, biases, and myths surrounding Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI), a variety of Mental Health topics, and Cognitive/Intellectual disabilities that are “Hidden Disabilities”.
