Distinguished Scholar Awards for 2008-2009 have been presented to professors - Robert Applebaum, sociology and gerontology, James Creech, French and Italian, and Chris Makaroff, chemistry and biochemistry - in recognition of a substantial and continuing record of research or creative activity. Michelle Boone, assistant professor of zoology, received the Distinguished Scholar Award for a junior faculty member who has demonstrated great potential as a scholar or artist.
Loren Hoffman, a graduate student in psychology at Miami University, has been recognized for her research by the Society for Neuroscience. Her research poster has been selected as a "hot topic" in the organization's press materials and will be promoted to the media during Neuroscience 2009, the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience.
In light of the current university and state budget downturns, Miami faculty recently expressed concerns to the university's board of trustees about prioritized spending regarding scholarships, faculty and renovation and construction. As a means of letting the full Miami community know how the board considers its decisions, board chair John Christie has written an open letter.
The Michael J. Colligan History Project lecture series at Miami University Hamilton continues with Kathleen Dalton's presentation "John Muir meets Theodore Roosevelt" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, in the Wilks Conference Center.
