Armstrong Student Center construction to celebrate milestone Tuesday

As work on Miami University's new Armstrong Student Center continues toward a January 2014 opening, activities will pause Tuesday, Oct. 23, to recognize a significant construction milestone. The placement of the final steel beam will be celebrated with a traditional "topping out" ceremony, and the Miami community is invited to share in the event.


Miami ready with new welcome centers for Family Weekend

This year, Miami University welcomes parents, siblings and friends with new centers hosted by students for Family Weekend, Oct. 26-28. Activities range from dinners and entertainment to departmental information sessions and the RedHawks taking on Ohio University in a 3:30 p.m. football showdown Saturday at Yager Stadium.


Global Rhythms Presentation Oct. 26: Weaving a cast of more than 600 in a production featuring music from Brazil, Bulgaria, Cuba, Egypt and India

Music from Brazil, Bulgaria, Cuba, Egypt and India will be featured in the Global Rhythms presentation "Blueprint of a New World" at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, in Hall Auditorium. An outdoor performance by the Miami University Marching Band will begin at 7 p.m.

Belk Lecture: The conservation of native seeds from southwestern U.S.

Miami University's department of botany presents this year's annual Belk Lecture, featuring Bill McDorman, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, 128 Pearson Hall. He is the executive director of Native Seeds/Search, a non-profit organization that he and his wife founded to support the conservation of native seeds in southwestern United States.

Ohio has been selected as one of 12 states to lead a $6.4 million initiative to award more associate degrees to community college students pursuing four-year credentials. Chart of graduation rates of colleges granting associates degrees in Ohio includes Miami Middletown at 23 percent and Miami Hamilton at 27 percent.

  • Indigenous Speaker Series
    The Lectures in Contemporary Anthropology Indigenous Speaker Series continues with award-winning filmmaker and director/producer Dustinn Craig. Dustinn will present his films, followed by a lecture, 4 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 23, in the Shriver Center Multipurpose Room, B and C. The lecture is presented by the department of anthropology.
  • Film screening Oct. 23
    The film "Amreeka" will be shown at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, in 25 Farmer School of Business. The screening is a continuation of the Muslims in America Film Festival, which is sponsored by the Center for American and World Cultures. The film tells the story of the hope and hardships that a single mother and her son experience when they move to the U.S. from Ramallah.
