A new advisory board comprising public leaders from across Ohio plans to mentor Miami University students in specialized "real world laboratory" internships enhancing students' understanding of the inner-workings of state and local government institutions.
First Lady Michelle Obama, wife of President Barack Obama, will speak at Miami University as part of a campaign visit on Saturday, Nov. 3.
Miami University has been selected as the national headquarters for the William E. Schmidt Youth Vocal Competition. Benjamin Smolder, associate professor of music, has been named the competition director. The competition, founded in 1992, conducts auditions in multiple locations throughout the country and provides awards and scholarships to talented high school vocalists. The goal of the competition is to encourage and nurture young people in the arts.

An "Evening of One Act Operas" presented by Miami's department of music will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 8-10, in Hall Auditorium. The evening will include the operetta "Trial by Jury" by Gilbert and Sullivan and two short operas, "The Face on the Barroom Floor" by Henry Mollicone and "Trouble in Tahiti" by Leonard Bernstein.
Nearly 150 graduate students will present their research and scholarship at the fourth annual Graduate Research Forum beginning at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, in Shriver Center.
