If Howard Blanning's life were a play, he'd title it "Fun and Ordinary."
"I like being ordinary," insists Blanning, assistant theatre professor, Miami's resident playwright, and Miami University Alumni Association's newly named Effective Educator. Although flattered that his former students nominated him for the award, he's not all that comfortable in this particular spotlight.
With the start of the new school year, everyone is asking, "What did you do this summer?" Some students had internships, while others spent their days working on their tans by the pool. Other students, however, took a different route by choosing to pay it forward abroad.
Charlie Coles, retired men's basketball coach at Miami University, and his wife Delores join the United Way of Oxford and Vicinity as honorary chairs for the 2012 campaign, which launches at Miami Oct. 1.

Miami has updated its policy prohibiting harassment and discrimination. Changes have been made to section 3.6 of the Miami University Policy and Information Manual (MUPIM) to provide expanded definitions and procedures related to harassment and discrimination.

Trustees to meet
Miami University's board of trustees will meet Friday, Sept. 21. The board will convene at 9 a.m. in the Heritage Room, Shriver Center, for an executive session, followed by the public study session, the public business session and an executive session.
