Miami aims toward zero waste: Composting comes to Oxford campus

Three thousand cups of coffee are sold on a typical day at King Cafe. What happens to all the coffee grounds generated? Until now, they went to the landfill, along with most of Miami's biodegradable solid waste. This month, they will be composted. The cafe is the site of a major composting pilot project - one of several on campus - to evaluate how well different best practices for solid waste reduction can be scaled up and applied campuswide.


Khalil Gibran Muhammad speaks Feb.12, part of Black History Celebration events

Khalil Gibran Muhammad, director of the New York Public Library's Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, will present "Grand Simplification: The Challenge of Historical Illiteracy in the Age of Mass Incarceration" at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, in the Shriver Center multipurpose room. His talk is part of the Black History Celebration events at Miami.


"Bella Gaia: Beautiful Earth" multi-media experience Feb. 12

The Kenji Williams Ensemble performs "Bella Gaia: Beautiful Earth," a multi-media experience featuring live musicians, dance and NASA visualizations, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, at the Talawanda High School Performing Arts Center, 5301 University Park Blvd. The performance is part of the Miami University Performing Arts Series.
