Teacher Leader Endorsement

TEAM Scholarship

The Teacher Education Access at Miami Scholarship provides a 50% discount on graduate tuition and fees for Ohio's PreK-12 Educators.

As of January 2011, the Ohio Department of Education offers four licensure levels for teachers:

  • Resident Educator License
  • Professional Educator License
  • Senior Professional Educator License
  • Lead Professional Educator License
Rationale for the Teacher Leader Endorsement

The Teacher Leader Endorsement is required for teachers who wish to obtain the Lead Professional Educator License. The new teacher leader endorsement prepares educators to serve as teacher leaders who work with adult learners, facilitate and lead change, manage conflict, and coach and mentor teachers at all stages in their careers. Additionally, teacher leaders assist principals in developing and supporting a shared vision and clear goals for schools. They provide staff development, mentoring and coaching to other professionals in their schools and districts.

Requirements for Teacher Leader Candidates

Candidates for the endorsement must hold a master's degree and have at least four years of successful teaching experience. Following candidates' successful completion of the teacher leader endorsement program, the endorsement will be added to a professional teaching license or professional or permanent teaching certificate.

College and University Teacher Preparation Programs

Miami's Teacher Leader Endorsement program includes the following courses:

  • EDL 603: Teacher Leadership
  • EDL 640: Practicum in Curriculum, Instruction and Professional Development
  • EDL 644: Mentoring and Coaching for Professional Learning

Two of the required courses are offered at least each term during the school year. Candidates can complete the program in a single school year, or may extend their work over two or more years.
