Initial Licensure with M.Ed.

The Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Special Education with Initial Teaching Certification program is designed for students seeking their first teaching credential, an Ohio K-12 Mild-Moderate Intervention Specialist teaching license and special education master's degree. Students should follow a prescribed plan of study created with the assistance of the SEOH program advisor. It may be completed in 2-2.5 years as a primarily part-time student. Students may also enroll in the program full-time. M.Ed. students are allowed 5 full years to complete their degree from the date of their program commencement. Credit hour requirements: 54.

The Ohio Department of Education requires a minimum of 12 semester hours of reading coursework (9 semester hours in the teaching of reading and 3 semester hours in the teaching of phonics). Methods I and II fulfill 6 of the 12 literacy hours. Additional reading courses regularly offered in the SEOH course format include:
