Farmer School Mock Trial Team Ranks Fourth in Nation

April 2012

This is the sixth consecutive top ten finish for the James Lewis Family Miami Mock Trial Program. The Miami MockHawk team battled their way to rank fourth in the nation at the 2012 National American Mock Trial Association Championship Tournament held April 13-15 in Minneapolis.

The top-ranking Miami team fought hard; having picked up only one win and one tie in the first four ballots against Maryland and Alabama-Birmingham, the team rallied to sweep all four remaining ballots with a 5-2-1 finish. The MockHawks took fourth behind Rutgers, Harvard, and Maryland.

Members of the winning Miami University team include: Alex Block, Claire Meikle, Alycia Walker, Krista Pikus, Pavel Gurevich, Ian Ferrell, Brad Kent, Deb O'Neal, and Andi Jackson.

Two Miami students received awards at the tournament. Alex Block, a second year mock trial student, was named All-American attorney and Julie Luizzi, a first year mock trial student on Miami's second squad, was named All-American witness.

The Miami Mock Trial Program was founded in 1994 by alumnus James Lewis. It is under the direction of Business Legal Studies Professor Dan Herron. The program's coaches are business legal faculty Dan Haughey, Neal Schuett, Laura Tholke, as well as alumna attorney Jade Smarda, and law student Missi Schuett.
