2012 William Blair Investment Banking Competition Winners Announced

November 2012

On October 15, 2012 ninety-eight students began the William Blair case competition. This year's case was Skyline Security, and the student teams were challenged to brief the board of directors about alternatives for selling the company, identifying potential buyers, and presenting estimates of what the company would be worth in today's market.

After the first round of competition, four finalist teams were announced: J. Ascher, N. Fencl, and A. Niekamp J. Braun, L. Cenko, J. Quintero, and W. Tso F. Edwards, D. Sandbo, A. Stevens, and M. Yee D. Kiyosaki, J. Cicerelli, N. Hirshman and R. Kertis

On November 8, each of these teams made their final presentation to a judging team of Miami alumni working in investment banking. Participating were Britt Trukenbrod, Lindsay Carlson, Kevin Jacobson, Patrick Watkins and Matt Weigand, all from William Blair, and David Dunstan from Western Reserve Partners.

The judges peppered the teams with questions ranging from how they arrived at various estimates of value, to detailed questions about the security industry and the relative prospects of the lines of business. Issues of management succession and leadership were also raised. The teams had to provide a concise, compelling thesis about their recommendations.

After careful deliberation, the judges announced the winning team of Freddy Edwards, Drew Sandbo, Alison Stevens and Michael Yee.
