James Lewis Family Miami Mock Trial Teams Continue the Tradition of Winning

February 2014

Two of Miami's four mock trial teams were in action last week. Miami's senior-laden "A" team and freshmen-laden "D" team were assigned to the Washington PA Mock Trial Regional Qualifying Tournament with 20 other squads hosted by Washington and Jefferson College, February 15-16, with the top 7 earning bids to the next round of tournaments.

Miami's "A" squad, pictured right, was favored to win and didn't disappoint. The senior-veteran team was the only squad of the 22 to sweep to a perfect 8-0 record. Miami "A" took all their ballots by a double-digit average 12.5 points. The squad also garnered an unheard-of six individual awards: three outstanding witnesses: Deb O'Neal, Lauren Yates, and Zoe Malakpa; three outstanding attorneys: Brandon Patterson and a double-award winner Alex Block. Block was the highest ranking attorney of the tournament. The "A" team is coached by Professors Dan Haughey and Neal Schuett.

Miami's "D" squad, viewed by some as "too young and inexperienced," took opponents by surprise, finishing in 3rd place in the 22 team field. Further, it tagged the only loss on second place 7-1 Patrick Henry University, a perennial mock trial power from northern Virginia. Individually, the team members also impressed - securing four individual awards: Katie O'Keefe and Oliver Zoellner were named outstanding regional witnesses while Adam Korn and Ryan Rugani snagged outstanding regional attorney honors. Overall, the two Miami teams took 10 of the 30 individual awards.

Professor Dan Herron coaches the "D" team. Miami's "B" team coached by Lawrence Hilton and Missi Schuett, and Miami's "C" team coached by Professor Laura Tholke and Jaime Glinka, will be in competition next weekend in Cincinnati.
