PSE brings home the gold (again).

April 2014

Forty-three students from PSE traveled to Miami, Florida to compete in eleven different categories. When all was said and done, the chapter was named the Lewis F. Gordon Top Gold Chapter. In addition, twelve members received scholarships totaling $13,000, and the chapter came away with six other top awards, including Top Marketing Project, Top Marketing Research Project, Top Public Relations Strategy, Top Sales Project, Recruitment Fair Challenge Winner, and the Award for Sustained Excellence. This is the nineteenth time since 1977 the Miami chapter has received the honor of Top Gold Chapter at the PSE National Convention.

Faculty advisor Don Norris was recognized as the Top Advisor of the Year among all 70 chapters of PSE across the nation. This is the fifth time in twenty years of advising the organization that Dr. Norris has received the award. He humbly stressed the involvement of the students as the most important factor in the success of the chapter. "What's most important to me is how strong and well-run the chapter is," he said. "By and large our chapter leaders are veterans. Some have been with the chapters for three years, coming in as freshmen and sophomores. By the time they're elected to the executive board, they've earned their stripes and are entitled to that level of respect."

He was also pleased with the work the students did with their presentations. "I was so incredibly impressed with the leadership. The four who presented the top chapter invested a tremendous amount of time into revising and practicing [for their presentations]. I couldn't have been more impressed."

According to incoming VP of Public Relations Jillian Moran, the ideas and relationships engendered by the convention are inspiring. Now, it's the goal of the incoming executive board to maintain that top spot at next year's conference. "Every year we have to build on that success and recreate it. We're constantly looking for new ways to serve our members and be the best leadership board possible."

The executive board and the other members of PSE Miami were able to take this honor from the convention on top of other commitments and classwork. "It takes a dedicated and passionate member to succeed in PSE," Jillian, a junior Marketing major, said. "Those are the people we tend to recruit."
