Rhett Brymer's Research on Bias by College Football Refs Subject of BusinessWeek Feature

Rhett Brymer, John Mee Assistant Professor of Management, was interviewed by BusinessWeek's Bryan Gruley on a very timely topic - the existence of bias in college football refereeing.

Brymer's extensive research with co-author Tim Holcomb, including a complex analysis of penalty yards assessed over the course of eight seasons, concludes that bias does exist, but not for the reasons conspiracy theorists may believe.

Brymer and his co-author's conclusion is that taking officiating out of conference hands and having it managed nationally, as it is in most NCAA sports, would help preserve football's integrity while guarding against potential game-fixing and other manipulation.
