Robert & Jean Barker Penny Marketing Scholarship to Benefit Future Generations of Farmer School Students

October 2013

Jean Barker Penny's $300,000 donation in honor of her husband, Robert (MU '49), will provide financial support to academically qualified undergraduate marketing students.

Robert and Jean's dream was to create a marketing agency that would provide their clients with a marketing edge. In 1949, they founded Penny & Penny, a marketing agency, in Dayton, Ohio. Their combination of creative excellence and strategic acumen allowed the agency to prosper, adding capabilities, clients and partners. Prior to their retirement, it became the largest agency in Dayton.

"We are both honored by, and grateful for, this substantial gift," remarked Ray Gorman, Interim Dean of the Farmer School. "We are honored that Mrs. Penny believes a Farmer School scholarship to be a fitting tribute to her husband. We are grateful that future generations of talented students will have the financial support necessary to achieve their dreams."

"A hallmark of the Farmer School is its emphasis on experiential learning," continued Gorman. "The Robert & Jean Barker Penny Marketing Scholarship will make it possible for deserving students to participate in marketing, advertising and public relations-centered programs such as Highwire Brand Studio, StrategyWorks and Chicago Marketing & Advertising Week."
