The Chateau

Situated in a park at the center of Differdange, Luxembourg, is MUDEC’s Château de Differdange, a 15th-century castle modernized to meet the needs of a 21st-century education.

In addition to five classrooms equipped with smartboards, the Chateau is equipped with Wi-Fi, and includes an extensive upper-foyer lounge, a library and a grande salle des fêtes (the Grand Hall), additional study lounges, staff and faculty offices, residences for the Dean and other members of the faculty and staff, and of course, the Cave.

The Cave is MUDEC’s student lounge (once the Château’s wine cellar), a comfortable, quiet student space. Furnished with couches, a study area, a TV and Wi-Fi access, students can relax, do homework and plan weekend adventures. The Cave offers a kitchen equipped with plates, silverware, microwaves, refrigerators and a small dining area. The cave also houses MUDEC’s laundry facilities, lockers, a foosball table and vending machines.

Life at the Chateau: FAQ

What's a typical day like at the Château?

For semester students, classes are Monday–Thursday with Discovery Tours taking place on many Fridays. For summer students, the class schedule varies. Students should always confirm their class schedule with the syllabus from each professor. Lunch is served around 11:30 a.m. each day that MUDEC classes are in session.

After classes have finished for the day, students can stay at the Château until closing time if they wish. There is a student lounge in the basement with a TV, couches, study tables/nooks, foosball, washers/dryers, and a student kitchen. There is also a large outdoor space for sports or relaxing. The Château also has a library that students have access to all day.

What time does the Château open/close everyday?

The Château opens at 8:00 a.m. and closes at 10:00 p.m. Most staff leave at 5:00 p.m., but there is usually a student "proctor" who is on duty and tidies up at the end of the night. Mr. Joseph Vari, Infastructures Manager, also works from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Monday through Thursday. The Dean and the Coordinator of Communications and Student Engagement both reside at the Château and can handle any emergencies if students are at the Château after 5:00 p.m.

Is it safe to walk around at night?

While Luxembourg is one of the safest countries in Europe, with significantly lower crime rates than the US, we strongly recommend that students use caution and the buddy system for any activity, especially if alcohol is involved.

We would prefer students take a cab home if it's late at night after the trains/buses have stopped running and if you don't have a buddy or two to walk with. Keep in mind that taxis in Luxembourg are extremely expensive so plan accordingly. They are much more affordable in other countries. Uber is not active in Luxembourg but is in many other countries.

Should I always carry my passport?

Sometimes, but not always. You should always carry your passport when you are traveling across borders, as well as your residency permit when you receive it in Luxembourg. However, we do not recommend to bring your passport with you daily if traveling wholly within one country, Luxembourg included. If traveling within in one country, you may wish to store a legible scan of your passport on your phone or carry a color copy rather than the physical document. There is little need to justify the risk of loss/theft in this case.

There is a case where both recommendations above could be true. For example, you do need your passport and residency permit (when obtained) if traveling from Luxembourg to France for one week.  However, once you are in France there is not a clear need to carry your passport with you daily as long as you remain wholly within France.

Please be aware that there are cases when a passport is necessary, whatever your location, such as when seeking to obtain a youth discount at a museum or checking into a hotel, as examples.
