Book Series: Writing Research, Pedagogy, and Policy

The Howe Center for Writing Excellence is excited to announce a new book series: Writing Research, Pedagogy, and Policy. The series will be published through Southern Illinois University Press and edited by Dr. Elizabeth Wardle, Director of the HCWE.

Description of the Series

This series publishes empirical research about writing, broadly conceived, with a focus on scholarship that seeks to impact pedagogy, practice, or policy in education (K-16) or civic/public contexts, nationally or internationally. Because the series is partially funded by the Roger and Joyce Howe Center for Writing Excellence (HCWE) at Miami University, the editorial board is particularly interested in soliciting manuscripts describing empirical studies of writing centers, writing across the curriculum initiatives, writing-related professional development programs, writing assessment, collaborations between writing centers and libraries, and work with English language learners. (See the HCWE's mission statement). This focus includes not only institutional research sites, but also cross-institutional research sites, including ones that consider changing scenes of education and how they are influencing writing.

The definition of “empirical” research for the purposes of this series draws on the definition used by the Dartmouth Summer Seminar for Composition Research: “systematic or replicable inquiry in response to one or more research questions that can generate interpretable data; inquiry that is grounded in previous research and designed to extend existing knowledge and, through scholarly publication or other public contribution, to be extended itself.” “Systematic” research includes archival and ethnographic methods, among many others.

Books can take the form of monographs or edited volumes of essays by multiple authors. Manuscripts should range from 60,000 to 90,000 words.
