The Howe Writing Across the Curriculum Programs, under the umbrella of the Howe Center for Writing Excellence, offer a variety of services and resources to help faculty from all disciplines effectively include writing in their courses.

Our services include long-term team training for department members, workshops for departments and programs, a WAC Workshop Series and stand-alone workshops, a faculty-led lunch series discussing best practices in Advanced Writing and W courses, individual consultations with faculty, and feedback on writing assignments.

For your classroom, we offer handouts on various writing topics and have resources for introducing students to Howe Writing Center services. You can also browse materials developed by Miami faculty, including disciplinary writing guides, innovative ideas, and best practices for the teaching of writing.

We also provide writing support for faculty themselves, in the form of Writing Retreats (formerly Boot Camps), writing groups, and weekly writing hours in the HCWE. Faculty can also make appointments in the Howe Writing Center for feedback on their own writing from trained graduate students.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Howe Writing Across the Curriculum Programs is to ensure that all Miami faculty and graduate teaching assistants are able to effectively include writing as a means of supporting learning in their courses and programs, and that a core group of faculty across all disciplines are both empowered and willing to propose and teach writing intensive courses (including advanced writing courses and CAS writing courses) that meet the needs of their students and departments.

A secondary part of our mission is to support the writing of faculty members themselves.
