The Howe Writing Center (HWC) is the writer-focused initiative of the Howe Center for Writing Excellence.

The mission of the HWC is to ensure that both undergraduate and graduate student writers at Miami receive helpful feedback and support on their writing projects from well-trained peer-consultants, and are assisted in developing as effective writers in different contexts and genres. We encourage writers to bring in writing produced for various purposes, whether professional, personal, or academic.

A second but central part of our mission is to serve as a site for developing undergraduate and graduate researchers as they explore writing and writing center work. Our consultants, Graduate Assistant Directors, and HWC staff regularly collaborate on Institutional Review Board (IRB)-approved research studies and often present their finding at venues like the International Writing Centers Association Conference and the National Conference on Peer Tutoring in Writing.

What we believe about writing

  • All writers have more to learn.
  • Learning to write effectively requires different kinds of practice, time, and effort.
  • Revision is central to developing writing.
  • Reflection is critical for writer’s development.
